What is scaling and how is it avoided?
Scaling is also referred to as flaking and can typically be prevented through the following:
1. Cure concrete properly.
2. Avoid the use of any deicers the first year.
3. Use sand (plain) anytime.
4. Never use deicers containing ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, magnesium acetate or magnesium nitrate.
5. Apply a concrete sealer after finishing.
Why cure concrete flatwork?
All concrete should be cured. Studies have shown that without proper curing, concrete may lose up to 50% of its strength. Curing -
1. Helps concrete gain strength.
2. Helps reduce shrinkage of concrete thus preventing surface cracking.
3. Increases surface hardness, helping to reduce abrasion damage.
4. Makes the concrete more watertight.
5. Helps resist freeze-thaw damage and damage from deicers.
